Colour is my language. My love of colour was definitely influenced by my late Korean mother and her desire for her daughters to wear the traditional Korean Hanbok, a dress full of beautiful saturated colours, to church or any celebration. My mother also opened my eyes to the larger world of colours. As a young child she would often say to me on our walks, “let’s count how many colours are in the sky; see this tree, the branch isn’t just brown.” She had this acute eye that was expressive with beauty which matched her unorthodox personality. This early lesson into ‘how to see beauty’ in everyday surroundings, helps me observe and influences my work. I paint from observation and I observe because I paint. I see my painting as metaphors for how I subscribe to my life, connection and intention, playfulness, and openness in my work.
